Estate Betteridge Collection Silver Seaweed & Shell Motif Serving Spoons, Circa 1903
A pair of matching seaweed and shell motif, pierced serving spoons in sterling silver, engraved 1878-1903. A little over 16.5 Troy Oz.
Over the years, menus change to match what the latest trend in taste or health interest is, and along with that, serving pieces change. In 1850, when Saratoga was beginning to boom as a hotspot for the rich and famous, a local chef invented, "Saratoga Chips" and this potato, sliced, fried and salted was an instant hit.
Every once and a while, in a really fine and big estate, we will see a pair of "Saratoga Chip Servers"; this particular pair of serving spoons were engraved to celebrate a 25-year anniversary, back in 1903. They are wonderfully heavy and fine potato chip servers of strong Art Nouveau influence.
