Cartier is widely recognized for changing the way the world looks at fine watchmaking.
When Louis Cartier introduced the Tonneau watch in 1906, he was convinced that timepieces belonged on the wrist and not in the pocket. The Tonneau is the earliest watch designed for this purpose. Cartier again upended the watchmaking world in 1910, when it introduced the first wristwatch with a deployant buckle, offering wearers an easier and more luxurious way to fasten their wristwatch. Today we see the influence of these innovations throughout the watchmaking industry.
