Monumental Silver "Lakota Cup" Trophy

$50,000

"Lakota Cup" trophy in sterling silver with dark wooden base, made by Martin & Hall, England, circa 1905. 4' height and approximately 28 pounds.

This extraordinary silver trophy was re-purposed and given to Steve Fossett in honor of his 60' trimaran 'Lakota', a maxi racer that broke speed records in the 1999 Pineapple Cup Race from Fort Lauderdale to Montego Bay. Fossett crossed the finish line in Montego Bay at 10:08 am, shattering the old multihull record he set two years earlier with the same boat.

Fossett made his fortune in the financial services industry, but was best known for many world records, including being the first person to fly by himself non-stop around the globe in a balloon; as a solo flight fixed-wing aircraft pilot; and, of course, setting a number of sailing speed records.

He disappeared on September 3, 2007, while flying a lightweight aircraft between Nevada and California. Extensive searches funded by Google, Richard Branson and other friends proved unsuccessful.
