The ‘driving watch,’ while an established watchmaking trope, has expanded in scope as to become nearly un-definable.

Once upon a time, this type of watch featured a dial that was rotated 10 or so degrees for better visibility when gripping a steering wheel. Then, it became a chronograph for measuring track speeds and distance. These days, an smart watch — with its myriad timers, gizmos, and gadgets — also makes for an excellent driver's device. But we hate smart watches, so let's not continue down that path...

While chock-full of potential pitfalls, there’s something to be said for a well-executed timepiece designed in collaboration with an actual automotive marque. Hublot’s Classic Fusion Ferrari GT collection, for example, sees the famed watchmaker collaborating directly with Ferrari’s design department, and the result is a watch that blends the best in Swiss accuracy with a discernibly Italian elegance and flair. (Whether or not you pair said watch with an actual Ferrari is up to you!)

This particular example, a Hublot Classic Fusion Ferrari GT Limited Edition from the 2020s, remains is in virtually unworn condition and comes complete with its boxes, books, and paperwork. Housed in a 45mm titanium case with a screw-down bezel, a ‘prancing horse’-signed crown, black and red chronograph pushers, and a sapphire crystal, it features a skeletonized dial with white ‘Arabic’ indices, a matching, luminous ‘sword’ handset, a dual-register chronograph layout, and a date window at 3 o’clock.

Powered by the automatic Hublot Calibre HUB 1280 with 72 hours of power reserve, the watch offers a window into the movement’s sophisticated, 354-part structure via the dial center, while its hooded lugs, raised bezel, and Gran Turismo-inspired design language smack clearly of automotive influence.

Fixed to an integrated, black Schedoni leather strap with a rubber lining, the Hublot Classic Fusion Ferrari GT Limited Edition shouldn't work as well as it does on the wrist.

But god help us, we love it!
