There is perhaps no more versatile complication than the chronograph. 

From race cars to rocket ships, boats to battlefields, you are likely to find a chronograph being employed to measure a plethora of tasks and times. From the Greek khrónos (“time”) and gráphō (“to write”), a chronograph is a watch that has the ability to record time, generally via the addition of small sub-counters that register minutes and hours. 

And what better use for a chronograph than within the confines of a pilot’s watch? IWC makes some of the finest pilot’s watches in the world, with a history stretching back to the early decades of the 20th century. 

This particular watch, the Pilot’s Watch Chronograph Spitfire, is the first member of its family to house the brand’s in-house Calibre 69000 movement — in this case, the Cal. 69380 automatic movement with day-date and chronograph displays. It features a 41mm stainless steel case, domed sapphire crystal, pump pushers, signed crown, and matte black Super-LumiNova dial with matching sword hands. It’s paired to a signed, brown leather strap with a signed steel pin buckle and includes its outer box, leather watch roll, books, polishing cloth and warranty card from 2021.

Handsome, well sized and featuring a knockout movement, it would be tough to argue that this reference 3879 isn’t one of the best values in pilot’s chronographs available today.

OVERALL CONDITION

Case is in outstanding condition overall, showing only light signs of wear from careful use. Matte black Luminova dial is in as-new condition with matching ‘sword’ handset. Signed crown.
