There is perhaps no more versatile complication than the chronograph. 

From race cars to rocket ships, boats to battlefields, you are likely to find a chronograph being employed to measure a plethora of tasks and times. From the Greek khrónos (“time”) and gráphō (“to write”), a chronograph is a watch that has the ability to record time, generally via the addition of small sub-counters that register minutes and hours. 

And what better use for a chronograph than within the confines of a pilot’s watch? IWC makes some of the finest pilot’s watches in the world, with a history stretching back to the early decades of the 20th century. Indeed, its contemporary takes on classic military aviator’s timepieces are so embedded in the horological zeitgeist, that chances are when someone says ‘pilot’s watch,’ it’s an IWC that comes to mind. 

This particular timepiece is a unique twist on the tried and true pilot’s watch formula: A Reference IWC377904, it’s an IWC Pilot’s Watch Chronograph Edition IWC X Hot Wheels Racing Works. (Say that three times fast.) This very special edition of 50 pieces consists of a watch plus a Hot Wheels replica of a 1955 Mercedes-Benz 300SL, both of which are contained in a special toolbox. Cool!

Housed in a 43mm titanium case with a sapphire crystal, a signed titanium crown, titanium barrel pushers, and a polished bezel, the watch features a grey sunburst ‘checkered flag’ dial with grey Arabic indices, a matching grey ‘sword’ handset, a triple-register chronograph, and a day-date display. Signed ‘Hot Wheels’ at 9 o’clock on the case flank, it’s powered by the IWC Calibre 69385 automatic movement with 46 hours of power reserve and comes paired to a black and white nylon and leather NATO-style strap with a signed, stainless steel pin buckle.

Truly, it doesn’t matter whether you’re a car guy or not — this pilot’s chronograph is sure to make you feel like a kid again.

OVERALL CONDITION

The case is in outstanding, as-new condition. Luminous multi-tone grey and black 'checkered-flag' dial with black radial subsidiary registers is in as-new condition with matching ‘sword’ handset. Signed crown. Sapphire exhibition caseback numbered 39/50.
