WHY WE LOVE IT

In the days before computerized timing equipment, wristwatches had important jobs to do besides simply telling the time.

During yachting regattas, so-called ‘yacht timers’ were equipped with special countdown functions that allowed a skipper to line up his vessel such that it would cross the start line exactly at the sounding of the starting gun. Of course, these watches also needed to be thoroughly water-resistant, first-rate timekeepers in and of themselves, and as a result, many robust, beautiful watches were developed by companies large and small.

This particular regatta timer, dating to the 1970s/1980s, is from Memosail, a Swiss watchmaker. Housed in a 40mm stainless steel tonneau case with an unsigned crown, barrel pushers, a sapphire crystal, and a polished bezel, it features a navy blue Tritium dial with a grey chapter ring, a yellow a 10-minute regatta timing disc within, and a matching handset with a bright orange seconds hand.

Powered by the famed, hand-wound Valjoux 7733 movement and paired to a stainless steel multi-link bracelet with a signed blade clasp, this colorful regatta timer is an awesome artifact from the pre-digital days of sport timing.

OVERALL CONDITION

The case is in very good condition overall showing normal signs of wear from age and use. Navy blue Tritium dial with grey chapter ring and yellow timing disc is in condition showing light degradation around edges with matching handset. Unsigned crown.
