WHY WE LOVE IT
Seemingly every other day, one of the major contemporary brands rolls out a limited edition of some kind.
With numbered pieces and special packaging and low production numbers, this approach sometimes leaves collectors and enthusiasts feeling a sense of manufactured scarcity and thus, fabricated importance. This makes a truly rare watch — inherently rare because so few were produced — a very special thing.
The 1956 Omega Olympic Cross of Merit is one of those special rare timepieces. Omega only made about 100 in this configuration, changing the design for both dial and case for the production watch. It's widely rumored that these Seamasters were never retailed, but rather given away to executives, dignitaries and celebrities — production commenced, but the seal was removed and replaced with applied roman numerals 'XVI.'
This particular watch features a 34mm 18K yellow gold case with fancy lugs, a cream-colored lacquer dial with the Olympic Cross of Merit and applied gold indices, a matching dauphine handset, a signed crown, and a snap-back case back, also with the Olympic Cross of Merit. Powered by the Omega Calibre 471 automatic movement, it’s a wildly cool, pre-production special edition-timepiece the likes of which we rarely see today.
Whether you’re an Omega fan or a devotee of the Olympics — or both — this watch is for you!
OVERALL CONDITION
The case is very good, strong condition overall showing normal signs of wear from consistent with age and use. Cream lacquer dial with applied 'fancy' indices and Olympic 'Cross Of Merit' seal is in good condition, showing light degradation/spidering throughout and wear around seal. Matching 'Dauphine' handset. Signed crown.
