Take a poll amongst wristwatch collectors, and we'd bet the consensus would be that there’s no timepiece more important or iconic than an Omega Speedmaster. 

Sure, chronographs such as the Rolex Daytona or the Heuer Carrera are classics — icons even — but neither can match the stature of the Speedy with regards to historical importance. In fact, arguably, no watch can.

In 2020, Speedmaster fans finally got what they’d been waiting years for.

That January, Omega launched a stainless steel Speedy based on the venerable Reference 105.003 ‘Ed White’ with a completely remade Calibre 321 hand-wound movement. Assembled by a single watchmaker in Omega’s manufacture in Biel/Bienne, this watch represented the fulfillment of a dream of so many Speedmaster devotees: To see the return of a movement that saw action on the surface of the Moon.

The new 321 is nearly a note-for-note copy of a second-generation 321, scanned by Omega from the watch worn by astronaut Gene Cernan in a Reference ST105.003 during Apollo 17. Though it replaces the copper finish of the original with more stable Sedna gold — and it’s viewable via a sapphire exhibition caseback — it’s otherwise largely identical to the original. 

The watch itself? It’s a beaut — and though it’s not a limited edition, production itself is highly limited given the constraints around the movement. Housed in a 39.7mm stainless steel ‘straight-lug’ case with a sapphire crystal, a black ceramic tachymeter “ DO90” bezel with white enamel printing, a signed crown, and dual pump pushers, it features a luminous matte black dial with a matching handset, an outer 1/5th-seconds track, and a triple-register chronograph layout with recessed sub registers.

The watch comes fitted to a handsome, contemporary recreation of the 1039 flat-link bracelet with polished outer links and brushed center links, plus a signed, push-button deployant clasp.

OVERALL CONDITION

The case is in outstanding condition overall showing light signs of wear consistent with age and use. Luminous matte black dial is in as-new condition with matching handset. Signed crown. Sapphire exhibition caseback.
