WHY WE LOVE IT

Patek Philippe has long been known for its complicated watchmaking, but following the stock market crash of 1929, fewer clients had the means to purchase these high-end timepieces. After securing a controlling interest in the firm, Jean and Charles Henri Stern decided to enlist the help of an English designer named David Penney to create a simple watch that would come in at a lower price point and appeal to the firm’s clientele. 

Using the principles espoused by the Bauhaus school and its minimalist, function-first philosophy, Penney conceived the Calatrava, taking its name from the Spanish military order established in the 12th century which had become the symbol of Patek Philippe. Since its debut in 1932, the Calatrava has become a byword for a simple, time-only dress watch — even from brands other than Patek itself.

This particular Calatrava is a ladies model from circa 2005. Housed in a 28mm, 18K white gold case with a sapphire crystal, a signed crown, and a diamond-encrusted bezel, it features a mother-of-pearl dial with applied, white gold Breguet indices at 12 o’clock, 6 o’clock, and 9 o’clock and diamond indices at the remainder of the hour positions. 

Complemented with a feuille handset and an inner, diamond-encrusted bezel, it’s powered by the Cal. E19 quartz movement and comes fitted to a 15mm, signed taupe alligator strap with a signed, white gold pin buckle. In excellent condition throughout, it also includes a baby blue, silk-wrapped alligator strap.

The Calatrava is one of Patek’s most enduring models for a reason.

OVERALL CONDITION

The case is in excellent condition overall showing only light signs of wear from gentle use. Mother of Pearl dial with applied diamond and 'Roman' indices is in as-new condition with matching handset. Signed crown.
