WHY WE LOVE IT
–
The Nautilus is without question one of the great horological icons of the 1970s, and one of the most in-demand timepiece models on the planet.
Collectors and prospectors alike are clamoring to get their hands on Genta's second great luxury sports watch, and with the recent news of the discontinuation of the flagship reference 5711 in steel, this dramatic rise in popularity shows no signs of slowing down.
But what we have here is no run-of-the-mill Nautilus. This is a Reference 3700/1 — the very first Nautilus ever designed. Upon its debut in 1976 it was christened the ‘Jumbo’ for its oversized, 42mm steel case, a name that stuck with the 42mm Nautilii throughout their history. Powered by the ultra-thin Calibre 28-255C (based on an ebauché from LeCoultre), it was a revelation, heralding as it did the dawn of the “luxury sports watch.”
This particular Reference 3700/1, dating to circa 1977, features a 42mm stainless steel case, a matching integrated bracelet with signed deployant clasp, and an absolutely stunning, navy blue Tritium “sigma” dial with a denim-like patina and a matching service handset. Furthermore, this example remains in fantastic, honest condition and is accompanied by an Extract from the Archives of Patek Philippe.
This wildly rare piece has become a true piece of horological history; an icon of icons; and must be experienced to be understood!
OVERALL CONDITION
The case is in very good condition overall showing normal wear consistent with age and use. Luminous blue 'sigma' dial with applied white gold and Tritium indices is in very good condition, showing patination throughout with matching service handset showing matching patination. Unsigned crown.
